There was a voice speaking to us the entire time. Sounded feminine, and introduced it as a training exercise. I'm not sure about the size of the ship, since we didn't get to explore too far on our own before the puzzles began.
But the ferry had taken us to an island at first, and that island had a strange box. After that we suddenly appeared on the ship.

I have to wonder what sort of training exercise puzzles like that were supposed to be, though.
